Susu Gray of Costa Rica Travelpoints considers Monteverde her second home.  If you are planning a trip or would like more information about the area, contact her at 1-800-626-3483.

Monteverde is a unique bridge of culture and nature, and this makes it a wonderful place to visit in Costa Rica.  The area was first settled in the 1930s by Costa Ricans.  In the 1950s, Quakers from Alabama also settled here, and together Costa Ricans and Quakers lived together and developed friendships that helped shape Monteverde as it is today.  Today, younger generations of some of these first families are the major hotel owners and tour operators of Monteverde.  This means that Monteverde hotels, tours, restaurants, and stores are largely (I would say almost entirely) locally-owned – something that cannot be said for many tourist areas of Costa Rica.

In Monteverde you can stay in a higher end hotel such as the El Establo or the Fonda Vela, or perhaps a moderately-priced fully furnished cabin at the Valle Campanas.  El Establo is centrally-located between the central “downtown” (one triangle of streets!) area called Santa Elena, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.  Its enormous property houses a new high-end restaurant, a spa, its own canopy tour, pool, and much more. The Fonda Vela hotel is the second closest hotel to the Monteverde Reserve.  Sometimes a guide can even help you spot quetzals and other wildlife in the surrounding Fonda Vela forest that you might think you could only find in the Monteverde Reserve.  Finally, the Valle Campanas are new cabins just a 3 minute taxi ride (probably a little more than a ½ mile) from the center of town.  It is a small property (only 4 cabins), very personalized and private.  A true Costa Rican experience, at Valle Campanas you can walk through forest trails where you might spot a sloth, observe beautiful sunsets from your balcony, enjoy delicious homemade breakfast prepared by the cabin owners, or take a look at old sugarcane machinery from one of the first “trapiches” in Monteverde.

I recommend Monteverde to anyone looking for the cloud forest’s breathtaking nature as well as to those looking for an interesting opportunity to visit a tourism-focused small town that still looks to preserve its unique blend of culture and nature.

Costa Rica Adventure

costa-rica.jpg

Toni Barnett, of James TravelPOINTS recently discover the beautiful country of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is a land of breathtaking beauty, natural wonder, and environmental consciousness. Much of Costa Rica is in its natural state with 27% of the country protected by land conservation or the national park system.  Extensive coasts compliment the lush jungles, cool mountains, and abundant wildlife in the interior regions.

Upon our arrival we headed into the hills outside of San Jose, our hotel patio overlooked the city lights below. Waking up to this peaceful resort on it’s own private coffee plantation surrounded by lush gardens gave us instant gratification and great start to a memorable vacation. We enjoyed a short hike that led to a series of waterfalls and pools, pleased to begin our adventure in such splendid fashion.

We left for Tamarindo, a sleepy surfing town on the Northern Pacific coast, long beaches offer a wide variety of surf that caters to beginners and experts. Our first time surfing wasn’t very successful but we sure had a great time trying. We left with fond memories of casual dinning at some wonderful little cafés, great waves, evening fireflies and relaxing walks along the beach.

Our next destination brought us to higher elevation in the Northwestern region and to Arenal. Thought to be just another dormant volcano, Arenal came alive on July 29, 1968 forever altering the landscape with dramatic explosions and lava flows. We hiked around the still belching Arenal where previous lava flows cut through the terrain. Staying up most of the night to view small glowing lava flows and listening as Arenal hissed and chug. We also visited the beautiful Tabacon Hot Springs-streams, waterfalls, and pools, this is a very special playground.

Our most scenic drive took us from Arenal through farmland and coffee plantations into the Cloud Forest region of Monteverde.  Here we were able to hike with our naturalist guide learning about this delicate ecosystem; we can’t imagine what we would have missed without his diverse knowledge and enthusiasm. With his spotting scope we were able to view two troops of howler monkeys. The males were competing for dominance with their unique and ferocious shrieks.   Our canopy tour took us sailing over the cloud forest it’s thrilling and beautiful, not nearly scary as I thought. A seriously good time enjoyed by all. Once we finished we walked along trails featuring several suspension bridges this is a great way to enjoy the canopy for those who wish to pass on the zip line.

Our final destination was Manuel Antonio. On our way there we spotted 7 Toucans and 2 sloths in one tree, the final check-off on our must do list! What an awe-inspiring 360º view of the beach and national park from our hotel balcony.  Our hike within the park was fantastic and once again our naturalist came through. He pointed out numerous things we would have missed without his keen eye.  Raccoon, several sloths, white faced and squirrel monkeys, birds, lizards, bats, and spiders became victims of our spotting scope and camera.

We left Costa Rica with vivid memories and the understanding of what makes this an extraordinary destination.  Call our Costa Rica experts to plan a vacation that will best meet your needs and let you mark a few of those “must dos” off your list 1-800-538-7461/303-938-9165, www.travelpoints.com.

Rachel Gelfer Hornaday with James TravelPOINTS just recently visited Costa Rica, one of the most popular countries in Central America. As a Costa Rica Travel Specialist I have visited Costa Rica on many different occasions.  On this visit I had the pleasure of experiencing Hotel Punta Islita, a hidden gem on the beautiful Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica.

Located on a secluded portion of the Nicoya Pennisula in Costa Rica, Hotel Punta Islita is best accessed by plane.  Once your flight has landed on the strip of dirt, better know as their “airstrip”, you will be met by a friendly representative of the hotel that will take you and your luggage on a 15 minute ride through the jungles and local country side to this amazing retreat located somewhere between heaven and earth.

Upon arrival to the resort you are greeted with warm welcomes and a cool cocktail as you marvel over the breathtaking vistas.  Within your first moments you begin to feel a sense of peace and relaxation and know that you have chosen the absolute right place to spend your vacation.

Hotel Punta Islita is the ideal location for your honeymoon or a romantic retreat. Weather you are in a deluxe room, a Jacuzzi suite, or a casita with plunge pool, Hotel Punta Islita’s tiered layout grants you seclusion and spectacular ocean views.  With each room category you enjoy the luxury of Aveda Spa products and Egyptian cotton linens, as well as the Costa Rican charm of hammocks and wood furnishings, all the while enjoying warm coastal breezes and magnificent sunsets.

If a family vacation is what you seek than look no further!  Punta Islita’s two bedroom luxury villas with private plunge pool allow families to enjoy the comforts of home with the amenities of a five star resort.  Located closer to the beach and family pool, these villas make a day in the sun and surf easily accessible. A swim up bar for the parents, a playground for the kids, and a poolside snack bar for all to enjoy, makes this a happening spot for family members of all ages.

If it is some quiet time you are after, the “adults only” infinity pool located near the 1492 Restaurant is an ideal location for lounging the day away with a good book.

When it is time for dinner, the 1492 Restaurant offers casual dining under a fifty foot thatch-palm ceiling and open-air ambiance.  The menu is a Costa Rican fusion cuisine focusing on rich flavors, colors, and textures.  The quality service and delicious flavors will be sure to leave you looking forward to your next meal.

Once you have had your fill of soaking up the sun, many activities await you.  Play a round of golf on the executive 9 hole course, get your adrenaline flowing on a zip line or ATV adventure, go horseback riding down the beach at sunset, or take a closer look into the lives of the local people.  There are many options to fill your day at this beautiful Costa Rican retreat.  But whatever you do, do not leave this place without

experiencing the magical healing and rejuvenation experience of the Casa Spa.

While offering a wide variety of treatments, the Ritual Massage is the house specialty.  A mixture of aromatherapy and hot stone massage, this experience will leave you with a new view on life.So if you are thinking that the stress of everyday life is starting to take a toll on you, come spend some time at Hotel Punta Islita and revive, replenish, and rejuvenate your soul.

We would be glad to put together a customized itinerary for your upcoming adventure to Costa Rica give us a call today, 303 938-9165/1-800-626-3483, www.costaricatravelpoints.com.
