Island Hopping in the Yucatan-Isla Mujeres and Holbox

Our family always enjoys vacationing in Mexico, easy flights, charming towns, impressive history, and amusing adventures on both water and land. Not to mention 1st class hotels and pristine beaches. In the past we’ve vacationed at All-Inclusive Resorts, this year we wanted a different, adventurous Mexican vacation in the Yucatan peninsula.
Our trip started at the Cancun airport, a taxi to Puerto Juarez and a ferry to Isla Mujeres (Island of Women). The island is 5 miles long and 2 1/2 miles wide and is considered a bargain for the Caribbean.
The downtown area is located near the ferry and is easy to navigate by foot. Restaurants with patio dining perfect for people watching line Main Street. Just a couple blocks from town is the famed North Beach and it is absolutely beautiful. Wonderfully relaxing to play in the water and let the kids have so much fun on a very safe beach. We could walk out into the crystal clear ocean for up to 75 yards. There are snack bars to purchase drinks and food for the day and we rented lounge chairs with a palapa for a little shade.
One of the main modes of transportation are mopeds or golf carts. We rented one for the day and adventured around the island visiting the different beaches and enjoyed the snorkeling.
Our next adventure was to travel to Isla Holbox, which lies 3 hours North West of Cancun. It was a good experience to see the out lying areas away from the mega resorts. Stopping in a town called Chiquila and a 20 min ferry ride to Isla Holbox. Once there we were took our golf cart taxi to our Hotel Villas Delfines.
This hotel is an Eco Friendly resort just what you would imagine a in a tropical island setting. Individual thatched roof bungalows, netting on the beds, and no TV. Conch shells for the shower heads, hammocks hung from our spacious patio, perfect for a quiet snooze and an extensive walking beach was just steps away. We played at the pool, and enjoyed the restaurant and game room.
We could walk in town where we enjoyed some of our finest meals. All the streets are sand so walking barefoot is acceptable. Lobster Pizza is renown to all who visit this island, it was Delicious! Downtown is small and quaint with the Zocalo and one church.
We toured the island by golf cart. Bird watching was plentiful with Flamingos, Heron and other species. Seashell collecting was in abundance collecting our share to bring home.
High season for Holbox is June through September when the Whale Sharks (world’s largest fish) are feeding on the Plankton in the shallow waters. During this time you can take a guided tour and snorkel up close with the “big” fish.
Being on Isla Holbox was relaxing and took us away from all that we endure in the modern world. With reluctance it was time to leave this calming paradise and head back home, yes it was time to put our shoes back on.
We enjoyed some great experiences, learned a bit, and had great quality time as a family. To find our more about these secret hideaways give Carolien or any of the experts at James TravelPOINTS a call 1-800-538-7461/303 442-2340, www.travelpoints.com.
