New York-Restaurants and More

There’s no shortage of great restaurants in New York City.  (You could live here for years and never run out of fabulous places to try.)

So, where do the locals go when they are craving sautéed fois gras or chateaubriand?  Le Cirque.  Located in The New York Palace, this special-occasion restaurant, with its whimsical circus theme, is a must for Continental cuisine.  Expect to pay about $150 per person, excluding wine.  Make your reservations well in advance (two months ahead is recommended for dinner).

For the ultimate Big Apple evening, combine a Lincoln Center performance with dinner at nearby Café Des Artistes, a favorite among New Yorkers and visitors since 1917.

You will find everything in Manhattan except the world’s best steak.  For that you will have to go to Brooklyn.  Hail a cab and treat yourself to the best Porterhouse on the planet at Peter Luger Steakhouse, a virtual institution for more than a century.  Call ahead for reservations; even with them, you’ll have to wait for a table (a good excuse to meander into the bar for a martini).

Speaking of martinis, Manhattan’s best – bar none- are mixed at the Four Seasons Hotel New York on East 57th Street.  Craving a corned beef on rye?  For the real McCoy, head to the Carnegie Delicatessen, located on Seventh Avenue between 54th and 55th Streets.  Or, for another authentic taste of New York, check out Zabar’s, where the locals to nosh and shop (up to midnight on Saturdays).  Located at 2245 Broadway, Zabar’s is a city phenomenon and a great place to pick up a souvenir kitchen item to take home.

Antiques?

The most prestigious antiques fair in the country has long been the Winter Antiques Show held each January in Manhattan at the Park Avenue Armory.  Objects ranging from American decorative and folk art to Egyptian and Greek antiquities are of museum quality.  You’ll also see celebrity collectors with names like Getty, Ford, Mellon and Dillon.
